The return of the slip dress seen on the spring/summer 2016 runways has to be one of the most subtlety sexy propositions we have seen in a while. Well, since we last saw it. Lusciously languorous, the bias cut skims and the fine straps give just the right amount of shoulder and décolletage. Aside from being goddess-worthy sleepwear, the bias-cut slip does superb double-duty as a ready to wear item.
The sinuous goodness of the silk slip was a staple in a number of collections. Our favourites came from Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein and Jonathan Saunders but by far the King of the slip dress is John Galliano. He tweaked and resurrected his 1990s icon for his spring summer 2016 collection and we heartily approve; our Aurora nightdress is an ode to his peerless slip dresses.
If you think all that supple, perfectly draped silk is too good for bed and want to take your nightwear outside, style yours with a fine polo neck underneath or top it with a chunky knit polo (a la a ‘90s Kate Moss) or cashmere cardigan until it gets warm enough to go it alone. When the mercury rises a little, try wearing it under another skirt or topping it with a mannish blazer to turn down the come-to-bed dial.... if you must.
